The IJF is a nonprofit. That means every dollar from donors and subscribers directly supports our mission of strengthening Canadian democracy through public interest journalism. You can see a full list of all our donors here. Want to join them? You can subscribe here or donate here.
In our 2023 fiscal year, which ran from Nov. 1, 2022, to Oct. 31, 2023, we spent 89 per cent of our supporters’ money on staff costs. That’s up 6 per cent from last year and comes mostly due to a drop in tech spending which was at 13 per cent last year and has now dropped to 5 per cent.
Want to see how our costs for this year compare to those from last year? Please check out this page. Rent is a brand new line item for the IJF. We spent $5,114 on a co-working space for nonprofits in Toronto after our team in that city asked for a place to meet up twice a week. Our insurance costs jumped significantly in 2023 to $12,115 after we launched (investigative journalism is expensive to insure)! However, that should drop quite a lot next year as we’re now proud members of the Canadian Media Protective Association, a group that gets lower rates for media outlets by purchasing insurance together.
The drop in tech spending comes from the incredible work of our tech team over the past year, who cut our Amazon Web Services bills in half. Most of our other tech costs (Logtail, Docsend, Vercel) remain the same but Supabase, which we use to host our databases, is up to about $800 a month now because we pay based on how many people do searches.
We’ll update this page at the end of the next fiscal year, which ends on October 31 each year.
