The RCMP are considering dozens of requests from officers who want to use artificial intelligence for policework as Canada’s government pushes public servants to adopt the new technology. Documents released under access to information legislation reveal that as of September 2023 the RCMP had already received 146 requests for assessments for different technological tools from their staff, including a number that involved artificial intelligence.

Those included 32 requests for “algorithmic policing technology” to predict and monitor crime trends, seven requests to help trace digital assets like cryptocurrency and two requests related to “investigative genetic genealogy.”
