About half of the Airbnbs in major Canadian cities appear to be operating without a licence, according to a new analysis by the Investigative Journalism Foundation (IJF).

Across nine of Canada’s largest cities, there were approximately 33,751 active Airbnb listings in 2022 but just 16,566 short-term rental licences issued by the cities.
