Fisheries and Oceans Canada plans to fix its own fish-tagging systems rather than send them south for service, according to a recent procurement notice.

The department relies on automated systems to sort, tag and clip the fins of millions of fish each year, work required under the Pacific Salmon Treaty, the 1985 agreement with the United States that governs West Coast and Yukon fisheries.
